Plain English explanations of technical terms

New to mining? This glossary explains all the technical terms you'll see on our website in plain, everyday language. Don't worry if you don't understand everything at first - mining has its own vocabulary, and we're here to help you learn it.

ASIC

Application-Specific Integrated Circuit

A computer chip designed to do only one thing (in this case, mine Bitcoin) very efficiently. Think of it like a calculator that can only do Bitcoin mining calculations, but does them extremely fast.

Hash Rate / TH/s / GH/s

Terahashes per second / Gigahashes per second

Mining speed - how many calculations your hardware can do per second. Higher is better. 1 TH/s = 1 trillion calculations per second. The Twin Jade J88 delivers 2.4 TH/s (2.4 trillion calculations per second). It's like measuring a car's speed in MPH - higher hash rate means more mining power.

PCIe

Peripheral Component Interconnect Express

The slot in your computer where you plug in expansion cards like graphics cards, sound cards, or mining cards. Think of it as a high-speed USB port built into your motherboard.

Power Efficiency (GH/W)

Gigahashes per Watt

How much mining you get per watt of electricity. Higher means lower power bills. It's like miles-per-gallon for cars - better efficiency means you mine more Bitcoin for less money spent on electricity.

Mining Pool

A group of miners who combine their computing power and share rewards proportionally. Mining pools are necessary for small-scale miners because finding a Bitcoin block solo would take years. It's like a lottery pool where you buy tickets together and split any winnings.

Bridge ASIC

A specialized chip that connects different types of computer components. Our JX888 bridge ASIC connects your computer's PCIe slot to the mining processors, handling all the communication between them.

UART

Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter

A communication port that lets computer components talk to each other. Think of it like a phone line between your computer and the mining chip. The Twin Jade has 4 of these, so both mining chips can talk to your computer at the same time.

Daemon

A computer program that runs in the background doing work automatically. The 'jaded' daemon is the mining software that runs 24/7, constantly communicating with mining pools and managing your hardware.

Stratum Protocol

The communication method mining hardware uses to talk to mining pools. It's the standard 'language' that all Bitcoin miners and pools speak to each other.

Solo Mining

Independent mining without a pool

Mining Bitcoin independently without joining a pool. You compete directly with large mining farms for block rewards. The Hash Processing Unit architecture provides latency advantages for solo mining because it uses your computer's CPU and network—faster response times than ESP32-based miners when a block is found.

Firmware

Software that's permanently programmed into hardware (like a DVD player's operating system). It controls how the hardware operates.

Driver

A small program that lets your computer's operating system communicate with a hardware device. Just like you need a printer driver to print, you need the JX888 driver so your computer can talk to your mining hardware.

6-pin Power Connector

A standard power cable used to provide extra power to graphics cards and mining hardware. It has 6 pins and connects to your computer's power supply. Most gaming PCs already have these cables.

CLI

Command Line Interface

A text-based way to control software by typing commands (like old MS-DOS or the Terminal on Mac). The 'jade' CLI lets you control your miner by typing commands instead of clicking buttons.

Open Source / GPL

General Public License

Software whose code is publicly available for anyone to inspect, modify, and use. It means we're not hiding anything - you can see exactly how our software works.

Microcontroller / MCU

A tiny computer used to control other devices (like an Arduino or ESP32). Traditional miners use these as a middleman between your PC and the mining chips. Twin Jade eliminates this for better performance.

TUI

Text User Interface

A visual display in your terminal/command prompt that updates in real-time. The 'jade top' command shows a live dashboard of your mining performance, similar to Task Manager on Windows.

DMA

Direct Memory Access

A way for hardware to transfer data without involving the main processor, making data transfers faster and more efficient.

I2C / SPI

Inter-Integrated Circuit / Serial Peripheral Interface

Communication methods used by computer chips to talk to sensors and other components. These are low-level technical details you don't need to worry about - they just work.
